Dr. Jennifer Steffel-Johnson is the Associate Chair of the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning program. Her Affordable Urban Housing class takes an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to learning and culminates in the Design By Community Charrette.
“What’s challenging is to create good opportunities for people across the city, and certainly people with lower incomes face more challenges in finding good places to live” – Dr. Jennifer Steffel-Johnson
This charrette brings together students, city officials, members of real Colorado communities, and professionals to design affordable urban housing projects. Students benefit from the experience of working on a real project, and communities benefit from new ideas and services that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive. All benefit from the connections they build and the sense of community they develop in the charrette.
The College of Architecture and Planning partners with Housing Colorado, a non-profit organization, to organize the charrette. Find out more about Housing Colorado here.
